In the province of La Pampa, in general, livestock breeding systems sustain their forage production through the combined use of natural grassland and warm-season perennial grasses. However, the latter only express a fraction of their potential productivity. In order to establish management prescriptions that may allow maintaining the pastures' productivity, quality and persistence, it is important to know the response of the plants to the application of renewal practices, fertilization and inter-seeding with legumes and defoliation management. The present Project will be developed in two modules. In the first one, on an aged pasture of kleingrass (Panicum coloratum L. var coloratum) cv Verde, rejuvenation practices will be applied and their effect on the use of water efficiency, N accumulation and aerial dry matter accumulation, N efficiencies of reabsorption and use, N proficiency of reabsorption will be studied and analyzed. In the second module, it is proposed to identify, on plots of kleingrass, the optimal combination of frequency and intensity of defoliation, according to its effect on pasture productivity, nutritive value and persistence.
Key words: kleingrass, C4 grass, N immobilization, defoliation frequency.
